The coffee shrub:

The original home of the coffee shrub is located in the southwestern mountain forests of Ethiopia. Coffee first reached Europe after the Turks besieged the city of Vienna in 1683. Although the coffee shrub is not very demanding, the plant thrives only on a specific soil and climate. The coffee bush needs a climate of 15 to 30 ° C and a shady and moist location. You can find the coffee bush up to a height of 1000 meters. The largest yield is obtained in slightly acidic, loose and airpermeable soils of volcanic origin. The cultivation of the coffee bush is very tedious and the first yield is obtained only after 4 to 5 years. However, the coffee bush then carries up to 35 years. Where there are no large differences in temperature during the different seasons, the coffee bush flourishes throughout the year, so that all seasons of the year on the coffee bush fruits and flowers can be found in all stages of development. Once the fruits are violet black, the time of harvest begins.

The coffee bush is an evergreen shrub or a small tree and reaches a height of 5-6 meters. The leaves of the coffee shrub are oppositely, light green, oblong-elliptic and become about 7-10 cm long. On the edge the leaves are wavy and leathery glossy at the top. The small white flowers sit in groups of four to sixteen in the axils of the leaves and remind in their scent of jasmine. The fruits of the coffee tree are cherry-sized drupes. At first they are dark green, but as soon as they are ripe, the color gradually turns yellow and then red. When fully ripe they are violet black. The outer layer of the fruits consists of a juicy, sweet meat and the two seeds enclosed by the meat are individually surrounded by a parchment-like, dry, smooth and straw-colored shell.
