POGOSTEMON CABLIN OIL
The patchouli shrub:
Patchouli is located in large areas of Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, South China). Patchouli grows as a perennial subshrub or herbaceous plant and grows up to 100 cm high. The stems are hairy tomentose. The dark green leaves have a petiole, which is between 1 and 6 cm long. The leaf blade is round to ovate, 2-10 cm long and 1-8 cm wide. Top and bottom are hairy tomentose as well. The leaf margins are irregularly notched. The flowers stand in false whorls, which are 4-7 cm long.
How organic patchouli oil is produced:
The organic patchouli oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the fresh leaves of the patchouli scrub (Pogostemon cablin). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds of the leaves. Due to the non-miscibility of the organic components of the essential oil and of the water, a spontaneous phase separation takes place during the cooling, so that the pure essential oil can be separated. The yield is between 1 and 4%.
The organic patchouli oil is a viscous, light to dark yellow, sometimes even brown colored, liquid. It has a characteristic woody-balsamic fragrance with slightly camphor notes.
Relative composition of organic patchouli oil:
The main component of organic patchouli oil is patchoulole. The norpatchoulenole contained in a much lower concentration, however, is responsible for the characteristic odor.
