CYMBOPOGON WINTERIANUS HERB OIL
The citronella grass:
The species Maha Pengiri grass (citronella grass, Cymbopogon winteranius) comes from the genus of lemon grass in the family of sweet grasses The Maha Pengiri grass originally comes from Java (Indonesia), but is now widely cultivated in Southeast Asia and especially in India. The perennial grass grows in clumps and reaches a height of up to two meters. The lower portion of the leaves is reddish. The leaves are smooth and shiny and are up to one meter long and 1.5 cm wide. From about two-thirds of their length they begin to bend. The leaf sheath is smooth and hairless and yellow or purple-red in color.
How organic citronella oil is produced:
The organic citronella oil iis obtained by water steam distillation of the leaves of maha pengiri grass (citronella grass, Cymbopogon winteranius). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds of the plant parts. Due to the non-miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and the essential oil can be easily separated. The yield is between 0.5 and 1.2%.
The organic citronella oil is a mobile, yellow liquid. It has a strong, characteristic bitter-fresh fragrance with a strong lemon and lemon balm aroma, which is why the oil is also known as Melissa indicum. It dissolves in alcohol (1:2, ethanol), vegetable oils and other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water.
Relative composition of organic citronella oil:
The main components of organic citronella oil are geraniol, citronellal, limonene and citronellol. In lesser amounts are also included borneol, geranyl acetate, methyl eugenol and linalool.
